Liberia Energy Country Briefing
Summary
Liberia is one of West Africa's smallest energy markets but possesses significant long-term potential driven by offshore hydrocarbon prospects, abundant hydropower resources, and growing renewable energy opportunities. Despite progress in post-war reconstruction, Liberia remains heavily dependent on imported petroleum products for transportation, power generation, and industrial activities. Electricity access remains among the lowest in Africa, though recent investments in transmission infrastructure, hydropower rehabilitation, and regional power interconnections are gradually improving the country's energy landscape. The country's energy sector is characterized by three major themes:
? Heavy dependence on imported refined petroleum products
? Underdeveloped electricity infrastructure with growing renewable potential
? Frontier offshore hydrocarbon exploration with significant geological upside but limited commercial discoveries to date
For investors and energy stakeholders, Liberia represents a long-term frontier opportunity rather than an immediate production market.
